1915-S $50 Panama-Pacific 50 Dollar Round--Bent--NCS.
1915-S $50 Panama-Pacific 50 Dollar Round--Bent--NCS. Unc. Details. While the designs of Robert Aitken, sculptor of the Panama-Pacific fifty dollar gold pieces and two later silver commemoratives, have attracted considerable attention from numismatists, the artist himself has not received the same treatment. In fact, few numismatists knew more than fragments about his life prior to Q. David Bowers' biographical sketch in the appendix of Commemorative Coins of the United States. As a native son of San Francisco, Mr. Aitken was a natural choice to design a coin with such close ties to San Francisco, though by the time he received the commission, Mr. Aitken had maintained a studio in New York City for eight years. His sculpture was well-represented elsewhere at the Panama-Pacific Exposition, particularly his renditions of the four classical elements, and generations of schoolchildren, lawyers, and scholars have viewed his work in Washington, D.C., which includes the West Pediment of the United States Supreme Court Building and the South Pennsylvania Avenue entrance to the National Archives.
This piece has rich orange-gold color and essentially contact-free surfaces. The mint luster is a bit thin, as indicated by the net grade. NCS has called this piece "Bent" and it does look that way when one views the left obverse field. But just from the sheer size and weight of this coin, it would seem unlikely. We leave it to viewers to make up their own minds when viewing this coin.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
