1915-S $50 Panama-Pacific 50 Dollar Octagonal MS64 PCG
1915-S $50 Panama-Pacific 50 Dollar Octagonal MS64 PCGS. Due to its unusual shape, and its connection to California's past private issues, the $50 Octagonal was distributed in slightly greater numbers than the round commemorative of similar design (645 vs. 483 pieces). Struck just before America's involvement in the First World War, the Greek helmet is pushed back on Liberty's head in a ready but not fully combative posture. The owl on the reverse signifies watchfulness. The equally massive octagonal piece adds dolphins about the borders, a symbol of America's desire to keep the Panama Canal open throughout the term of the Great War. An arms-length Gem, this piece appears to be worthy of an MS65 rating. Only upon close examination does one notice that a few hairline-thin abrasions are present on the portrait of Athena. Exceptionally lustrous with rich orange-gold color, and a magnificent example of this exceedingly rare and perennially popular type, one of the most famous and desirable coins in the history of American numismatics.
