1915-S $50 Panama-Pacific 50 Dollar Octagonal MS62 NGC. Compilations of certified coin populations are among the most useful tools available to the modern numismatists, yet they have their limits. If one combines the populations from the NGC Census and the PCGS Population Report for the octagonal variant of the Panama-Pacific "half union" commemorative, the sum is 784 pieces, a number that has to reflect resubmissions, since the net mintage was only 645 coins! A similar situation exists for the round version as well, and to a lesser extent for other low-mintage issues, such as 19th century proof gold.
That said, most numismatists recognize that some of the 645 eight-sided commemoratives have been lost to attrition, and still other survivors exhibit some form of impairment. The outsized pieces have heft and a broad surface area that attracts nicks and marks, particularly at the rim and on the broad devices. The present example is far better preserved in this respect than the grade would suggest. A number of minor flaws appear at the upper and lower rims, and a handful of small ticks are present on the cheek, but the fields have hardly any such marks. Evidence of a soft strike is present on the reverse, especially at the eagle's lower legs and on the dolphins, whose tails and fins blend into the rims. Still, this is a highly lustrous and appealing example of this important and popular gold commemorative, one of the most dramatic pieces ever coined by the United States and a suitable celebration of the Exposition.
From The Twin Hollows Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
