1915-S $5 MS64 PCGS.
1915-S $5 MS64 PCGS.<p>We are privileged to offer many conditionally rare 20th century gold coins in this important sale, and this Choice BU 1915-S Five is certainly worthy of careful consideration among advanced specialists. Mint records indicate that 164,000 '15-S Half Eagles were produced, but, like most S-mint issues in this series, few examples have survived in Mint State. Even BU quality coins are elusive, and, in grades above the MS63 level, the 1915-S trails only the 1911-D and 1914-S for top rarity honors among Indian Half Eagles. Indeed, it has been more than two years since we have offered a similarly graded representative. That coin was the Peter Bronson specimen that realized $25,000 as lot 8049 in our 1999 Chicago ANA Signature Sale. The color on both sides of this coin is outstanding, with well blended reddish-gold and orange-gold shades. Suggestions of copper patina are seen in the upper reverse field and at the top of the Indian's headdress. Typically struck for the issue, the features are all sharp save for those over the lower right obverse. The finish is satiny, and there are no singularly distracting abrasions. Evidence of die deterioration (as produced, and characteristic of many '15-S Fives) is noted around the reverse periphery, but the S mintmark is well shaped and boldly defined. Both major grading services combined have seen just 13 coins in MS64, and there is a lone MS65 NGC specimen finer (10/01).
