1915-S $5 MS63 NGC. With the exception of the 1909-O and 1911-D, the 1915-S (164,000 pieces produced) is the most difficult Indian Half Eagle to locate in Mint State. While the '15-S is equally as elusive as the 1909-S in BU and Select grades, it is more rare than that date, as well as the 1910-S, 1912-S, 1913-S, 1914-S, and 1916-S, at the Choice and Gem levels of preservation. This is a typically produced example for the issue with bold definition over all features with the exception of the lower feathers in the Indian's headdress and the S mintmark. Both sides are satiny in sheen with simply gorgeous reddish-gold color that is perhaps the most visually impressive of this coin's positive attributes. An uncommonly smooth coin for the grade, the only abrasion of consequence is well concealed in the Indian's headdress. Population: 14 in 63, with a mere six finer (7/02).
