1915-S $2 1/2 Panama-Pacific Quarter Eagle MS67 PCGS. The Panama Canal opened on August 15, 1914--an occasion that the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco would commemorate from February 20 through December 4, 1915. In order to raise money for the latter event, Congress authorized the Mint to produce and sell Panama-Pacific Commemorative coins in four denominations: Half Dollar, Gold Dollar, Quarter Eagle, and Fifty Dollar. The Quarter Eagle (10,017 pieces produced, 3,251 examples of which were melted as unsold) was designed by Charles Barber and George Morgan. Survivors are among the more conditionally challenging coins in the U.S. Commemorative series, and the present Superb Gem is unsurpassable in grade at either NGC or PCGS. A lovely coin to behold, the mostly orange-gold surfaces display a smooth, matte-like sheen with splashes of pale powder-blue color here and there. Both sides are fully struck with nary a distracting blemish to report. Population: 14 in 67, 0 finer (10/02).Ex: Irving Goodman Collection (Superior, 5/1996), lot 1514.From the St. Louis Collection.
