1915-S<$2 1/2> Panama-Pacific Quarter Eagle MS67 PCGS. Ex: Swiss America/Dr. Merritt. Few U.S. coins can compare in beauty to the Panama-Pacific quarter eagle. The allegorical figure of Minerva riding a hippocampus is unrivaled in classical symbolism in the coinage of this country. The reverse featuring the defiant eagle is taken from a pattern from the 1870s. Several commemorative denominations were issued for the Panama-Pacific Exposition. 10,000 quarter eagles were minted in June of 1915, and offered at the Exposition for $4 each. Only 6,749 pieces were sold, with the remainder being returned to the Mint for melting.
This Superb Gem is satiny and well struck, with rich orange-gold coloration and mint-green border accents. A tiny lintmark (as struck) is observed just above and behind the head of the hippocampus, but post-striking marks are conspicuously absent on both sides. As usual, wispy semi-circular die polish marks are noted in the obverse and reverse fields. Population: 14 in 67, 0 finer (4/06).
