1915-S $10 MS65 PCGS. The 1915-S is an absolute as well as a condition rarity in the ten dollar Indian series. Only 59,000 pieces were struck, and apparently few were shipped overseas as no hoards are mentioned in the literature and so few Uncirculated pieces known. Probably fewer than 200 pieces are known today in all grades of Uncirculated, with the vast majority of these graded MS63 or less. At the Gem level, only seven other coins have been certified with four in higher grades (11/06).
The new The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens as Illustrated by the Morse Collection mentions a couple of the finest examples of this issue that are known, and indicates the price levels the 1915-S can attain when conditions are right: "The finest example certified to date is an NGC MS67, a coin that has not been offered at public auction (at that grade) that we are aware of. The two 1915-S tens that have realized the highest price at public auction were both sold in 1989. Superior sold a PCGS MS65 that brought $198,000, and Heritage sold a PCGS MS66 later that same year, but after the 1989 investor-crazed market had softened. The latter coin realized $192,500."
This is a particularly clean and attractive example. It is also a coin that has been an integral part of three major collections of ten Indians. The surfaces have pronounced granularity (not always the case on 1915-S tens) with satiny mint luster. Both sides exhibit lovely reddish-gold color with occasional flecks of lilac interspersed. The only identifiers that can be reliably used for pedigree purposes are a short horizontal mark below the eye on the obverse, and a small alloy stain at 5 o'clock on that same side.
Ex: Thaine Price Collection (Akers, 5/98), lot 65; William Michael Thomas (Stack's, 1/04), lot 3026.
From The Kutasi Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
