1915 Muddy Ruel American League Player's Contract, Rookie Season, from the Herold "Muddy" Ruel Collection. The nineteen-year old kid everyone called "Muddy" gets his big break, as his hometown St. Louis Browns offer to pay him $125 a month for his services. Appearing in only ten games, and hitless in fourteen at-bats, Ruel would be benched by the squad and would not resurface until 1917 as a member of the Yankees. As a result, artifacts from Golden Age star's days in St. Louis are essentially non-existent, and this contract surely represents the absolute pinnacle of the hypothetical surviving supply. Clearly only a tiny handful of contracts from "name players" predating 1920 exist, period, making this rookie contract all the more exceptional. Those concerned about condition need not worry, as this historic document has not aged a day since it introduced Ruel to the professional baseball world, and shows wear only the blank bat side where it was carefully removed from a scrapbook. Joining Muddy's flawless ink signature accepting the terms are that of team president Robert Hedges and, acting as a witness, Muddy's father "Geo A. Ruel." LOA from PSA/DNA.
