Struck in silver with a reeded edge. This extremely rare pattern was struck before the S mintmark was added to the obverse die. Examples are known in silver, copper, and gold, and we have a complete, three-piece that has been intact for decades. This is one of fewer than four pieces that are believed extant today in silver. In this coin's last auction appearance in 1980, the cataloger noted a curious striking anomaly: "The repeated blows of the die has created a slight overlapping of the obverse wire rim at 1 o'clock." The surfaces are exceptionally bright and untoned in the centers with deeper golden-brown and blue toning around margins. The devices show pinpoint striking definition and, in addition to the above mentioned striking anomaly on the rim, there is also evidence of a second strike on the reverse on the left (facing) edge of the eagle's wing. A very important and very rare opportunity to acquire this die trial in the metal of issue.
Ex: 1979 ANA Sale (New England, 7/79), lot 1364, where it realized an impressive $15,000.
From The Sound Beach Collection.

Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions

No Prior Data Recorded

<FONT face=arial size=1 ?>PLEASE NOTE: All prices realized reflect the final hammer price PLUS the buyer's premium in auctions that charge a buyer's premium.
