1915<$5> PR66 NGC. Ex: Trompeter, Richmond. A magnificent straw-gold premium Gem. Fully struck, with definition on the crevices of the headdress feathers that is simply unattainable on the corresponding commercial strikes. The preservation is immaculate save for a trivial graze on the field near the eagle's beak, which is mentioned primarily to assist those who may trace the pedigree of this important piece in any future auction appearances. 1915 was the final year of matte gold proof production; collector interest had fallen by this point and only 75 pieces were struck, the lowest proof mintage of the type. Trompeter's incredible collection of proof Half Eagles, Eagles, and Double Eagles, along with the unique set of proof 1872 Amazonian gold patterns, were purchased intact from his estate by Heritage in 1997.
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 9/98), lot 6978; Richmond Collection, Part One (David Lawrence, 7/04), lot 1559.
