1915 $20 MS65 NGC. The 1915 Saint-Gaudens double eagle 1915[$20] MS65 NGC.
1915<$20> MS65 NGC. The 1915 Saint-Gaudens double eagle continues to mimic the conditionally challenged 1913 and 1914 issues. Despite a generous mintage of 152,050 pieces, this date is all but impossible to locate in Gem grades. Where did they all go, and why are the surviving coins seldom seen in grades above MS63? To this end we will never know, but the grading statistics provide a glimpse into those that do survive. NGC and PCGS have each graded 21 specimens of this date as MS65 for a total of 42, but neither service has graded any higher. The luster remains fresh and full, with the desirable radiance attendant to this coining era. Bright yellow-gold dominates the surfaces, and there are no significant or distracting nicks to report. For identification purposes, there is a nick on Liberty's left leg, midway up her calf. The eagle is wonderfully clean for the grade, with minimal signs of contact. America was supplying the European war with ample supplies of gunpowder, arms and warships, and factories hummed with activity. Perhaps this coin sat out that terrible war in the depths of an Eastern bank vault, only to surface to be snapped up by some lucky collector and carefully preserved.
