1915<$2 1/2> MS65 NGC. The 1915 is the final Indian Head quarter eagle to be produced until this design was resurrected in 1925. Of the 606,000-piece mintage, Mike Fuljenz and Doug Winter (2001) estimate that between 3,000 and 4,000 specimens exist in Uncirculated grades. Full Gems are though to account for somewhere between 120 and 140 pieces, which more or less correlate with the 175 MS65 examples certified by NGC and PCGS (some of which are presumably resubmissions). Fewer than five or six higher grade coins are known.
The Gem specimen we present in this lot displays subtle alternations of yellow and copper-gold colors. The frosty-like surfaces exude better-than-average luster, which on this issue tends to be somewhat dull. The strike is sharp throughout, with excellent definition on the eagle's feathers, as well as on most of the central portions of the Indian's headdress, an area that is typically weak. The obverse is generally well preserved, while the reverse reveals some of the usually seen short pinscratches in the fields, none of which are individually offensive. Overall, this specimen shows above average eye appeal. Census: 100 in 65, 1 finer (4/06).
