1914-S $5 MS65 NGC. The 1914-S Indian Half Eagle i
1914-S $5 MS65 NGC. The 1914-S Indian Half Eagle is one of the most prized condition rarities among gold issues from the previous century, perhaps being the only contender capable of taking on the 1911-D Half Eagle for top rarity honors. Even the location of a near-Gem example can be considered a nearly impossible task, as evidenced by the fact that is has been five years since we last offered an MS64 1914-S.
So it is with great excitement that we are able to offer the quintessential 1914-S Five Dollar, the only known Gem example, originally from the fabulous Duckor Collection of Indian Head Half Eagles that was sold in 1990 for what was then an astounding price of $40,000. David Akers described the coin as "fully struck with blazing lustre and beautiful natural color," going on to say that "The surfaces are virtually mark-free and lack the granularity that is especially noticeable on this issue." The fact that this beautiful Gem doesn't even look like the typical Uncirculated 1914-S, which normally exhibits a crusty, subdued appearance, is what really sets it apart from even its closer rivals.
In many, if not most cases, a numismatic opportunity is not actually lost, just simply delayed until an equal quality coin comes up for sale. But in this instance it is predictably safe to say that an equal 1914-S may NEVER come along, and that acting on this one-of-a-kind Gem may prove to be a very astute move.
