<B>1914-S $10 MS66 PCGS.</B></I> As with many ten and twenty dollar gold pieces of the Saint-Gaudens design, the original mintage does not tell the collector much about the rarity of a particular issue. In the case of the 1914-S ten, the mintage was 208,000 pieces. Certainly a sufficient number to provide collectors with numerous high grade examples, or so one would think. However, probably no more than 1,000 examples are known today, most of which are spread through the XF to MS63 grades. It is in MS64 and better condition that the 1914-S shines as one of the premier condition rarities in the series. The always-quotable David Akers commented about the condition rarity of the 1914-S in the Thaine Price (1998) catalog: "Above the Choice level, the 1914-S is one of the most important condition rarities of the series, much more rare than the 1908-S, 1909-S, 1911-S, 1912-S and 1916-S ..." We would add to his comparison to the other S-mints, that the 1914-S is also scarcer than the D-mints and all the Philadelphia issues from 1908-1915. The 1914-S is indeed among the most undervalued issues in the series, along with the 1912-S and the 1915-S. It is ironic that the 1930-S carries a much higher valuation than these three S-mints, even though the surviving number of Gems of the 1930-S is significantly higher.<BR> In Gem condition, only 22 pieces have been certified by the two major services. In MS66 a mere four coins have been graded, and there is a single, tantalizing NGC MS67 piece that has not been seen in many years. The surfaces of this coin are nearly perfect. The last time it appeared in public auction (June of last year), the cataloger noted a small identifying mark located in the eagle's wing feathers below the M in UNUM. In addition to being exceptionally clean, the surfaces show strong mint frost over a matte-like finish.
