1914. Fianna Fail (The Irish Army) A Journal for Militant Ireland, edited and written by Terence MacSwiney. A rare complete run of this scarce publication.
letterpress, various printers including Patrick Mahon, Dublin, mainly pp4.
38 by 27cm., 15 by 10.5in.

This short-lived weekly was edited and mostly written by Terence MacSwiney, who sold all his books to finance it (see Costello’s biography). His purpose was to support the Irish Volunteers, and to oppose Irish recruitment to the British Army at the outset of the First World War. It covers the controversy with Redmond over the future of the Volunteers in detail. It was suppressed after the eleventh issue, which reports a German promise of support for Irish freedom conveyed to Roger Casement in Berlin. The printer’s name is cut from the last page of this issue in all copies we have seen.It is a valuable source for Volunteer activities and views before the Rising, especially in the southern area. It did not circulate outside Cork, and even there it was stocked by very few shops. Complete sets are extremely rare.
