1914-D<$20> MS65 NGC. The 1914-D, like its other D-mint counterparts from the teens, is actually an uncommon coin in Gem condition and is too often overlooked when offered. While the P-mints from the 1920s are many times more common, the 1914-D is overlooked because of the finish that is always seen on these coins. The mints produced coins in the teens with a granular, matte-like texture to the surfaces. This finish tends to disperse the satiny or frosted luster imparted to the coin by the striking process. This method of striking fell out of favor sometime around 1919 and the coins struck afterward have the smooth surfaces that we still see on coins today. That makes those pieces more approachable for most collectors. It takes a more advanced collector to appreciate the European-inspired and short-lived matte surface coinage seen from 1908-1918. This is a sharply defined Gem that has lovely granular surfaces with a satin-like overlay of mint luster. Magnification shows a few tiny abrasions but none are immediately obvious to the unaided eye.
