1914-D $2 1/2 MS65 NGC. The 1911-D and the 1914 have long been regarded as the keys to the Indian Quarter Eagle series, because of their low mintage and their scarcity in lower grades. At the MS65 level, however, the 1914-D emerges as a notable conditional rarity. Just 16 pieces have achieved the Gem grade at NGC as of (1/05), significantly fewer than any other issue including the 1911-D and 1914. Much of the reason for this is that the 1914-D "may well be the worst struck Indian Head Quarter Eagle," according to Michael Fuljenz and Douglas Winter in their 2001 reference, A Collector's Guide To Indian Head Quarter Eagles. The present piece is crisply struck, however, and only thorough examination reveals a few tiny areas of softness within the headdress. The lustrous lemon-gold surfaces are unabraded except for a couple of tiny ticks near the U in UNITED. Lot:7706
