1914 5C PR68 NGC. All proof Type Two Buffalo Nick
1914<5C> PR68 NGC. All proof Type Two Buffalo Nickels display two curious, as struck reverse features: a triangular defect at the top right of the E in UNITED and a die line over the reverse border from 7 o'clock to 9 o'clock. The uninitiated may assume that the presence of these features guarantees the proof status of any Type Two Buffalo Nickel. This is not, however, the case. Writing in 2000, David W. Lange asserts that these features were in the master hub with the result that an unusually well struck business strike could also display them. On the other hand, the Mint made a concerted effort with the 1914 production to make its proof Buffalo Nickels unmistakable as specimen strikings. The surface texture was most dramatically affected with a more finely grained, brighter satin finish being employed. Of course, the full striking definition that one could see on proof 1913 Type One and Type Two examples is also a noteworthy feature of those specimens dated 1914. This particular representative is also possessed of soft rose-silver hues on each side. The validity of the PR68 designation is more than upheld by the distraction-free surfaces. Combined NGC and PCGS Population: only 15 in 68, and there are none finer (3/05).
