1914 5C MS67 PCGS. The original patination on both sides is truly breathtaking and perfectly complements the strong technical merits. Layers of pastel shadings adorn frosty textured features that are both fully lustrous and devoid of grade-limiting blemishes. Both sides are sharply struck, this despite metal flow lines (as produced) on the obverse that suggest a late, worn state of the die. Writing in 2000, David W. Lange (The Complete Guide to Buffalo Nickels) states that the '14-P is "slightly scarce but available in all grades G through mint state. Choice and gem pieces can be had for a price." These statements may be true, but we caution bidders that the 1914 is seldom offered as a Superb Gem. In fact, NGC and PCGS combined have seen only 17 coins in MS67, and there are none certified finer (10/02).From The BTB Collection of Buffalo Nickels.
