1914<50C> MS66 PCGS. Collectors of Barber halves are well acquainted with the 1914 issue, one that is foundationally rare in every grade because of its minute mintage of 124,230 pieces. At coin shows, even worn AG3 examples of this issue are elusive, and middle-grade examples are virtually non-existent. Of course, in such a phenomenal grade as this Premium Gem MS66 example, this piece is at the top of the Condition Census of certified survivors. PCGS has certified two pieces in this grade, with none finer, while NGC has certified a single example, and none finer (6/06). This is the finest graded example of this issue that Heritage has ever had the privilege to offer. In fact, our records of major auctions show no offerings of an MS66 at public auction! This piece, furthermore, is tied with the MS66 PCGS-graded piece in the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor Collection, currently listed in the PCGS Set Registry as the highest-ranked collection of business strike Barber half dollars.
The present specimen has lush, deep copper-orange and gray-gold toning on the obverse, while the reverse is silver at the center and similarly toned at the rims. The underlying luster is rich, full, and intense. The piece is boldly struck, with the usual slight weakness on the reverse at the upper right shield corner and the eagle's right (facing) claw. A couple of minor abrasions that appear under a loupe are unworthy of singular mention. An astute and discriminating Barber half collector, perhaps one assembling another PCGS Registry Set, will recognize this for the sterling opportunity that it is.
