1914 $5 PR65 PCGS.
1914 $5 PR65 PCGS.<p>The official mintage of proof Five Dollar Indians for this year is a mere 125 pieces, but even that modest figure perhaps overstates the present day availability of this class Matte Proof issue. Reliable estimates based on certification data and known specimens kept in museums, collections, etc. place the number of surviving 1914 proof Half Eagles at between 40 to 50 pieces. The 1914 is the next to the last year the matte process of proofing was employed in the U.S. Mint. Breen notes in his 1988 Encyclopedia that the proofs of this year have a coarser sandblast finish than on the previous two years. The finish of this specimen certainly matches this description and both sides display a rich khaki green and golden color. Even the few trivial imperfections found with the aid of a glass appear to be Mint made. In every respect, a magnificent Matte Proof Indian that is worthy of the finest collection. Population: 6 in 65, 1 finer (10/01). Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
