1914/3 5C MS65 PCGS. FS-014.87. This is an interesting overdate for two reasons. First, the overdate feature seems to have been part of a working hub, not a working die because there are several known varieties. Second, the overdate feature remained undiscovered until 1996. Actually, these two facts are somewhat related. The fact that the overdate is part of a working hub means that the coins are actually a third generation copy of this feature. As a result, the 3 underdigit is difficult to discern on even the earliest die states. It is little wonder, therefore, that it remained undetected for 82 years. The 1914/3 is not only a fascinating coin, it is also a rare one. The recent discovery date and the difficulty of attribution mean that it is virtually impossible for us to determine the exact rarity of this variety. What we do know is that PCGS has seen only 24 Mint State examples (10/02). The fact that half of these "coins" are listed at the MS64 level suggest that the same example(s) was/were submitted numerous times in the search for an MS65 designation. One of only two coins at the latter level of preservation, this important Gem displays a mostly silver-gray sheen. Pale gold, champagne, and powder-blue undertones, however, are evident at a few angles. Both sides reveal fulsome mint bloom as the surfaces rotate under the light--a feature that is fully appreciable in the virtual absence of blemishes. A late die state, there are not only some metal flow lines (as struck), but the underdigit is only perceptible as a thin ridge at the top of the 4. Well struck save for a little softness of detail in the centers, the only worthwhile pedigree marker is a tiny, faint carbon fleck in the field below the bison's mouth. We cannot overstate the importance of this coin for advanced Buffalo Nickel collectors. From the BTB Collection of Buffalo Nickels.
