1914/3<5C> MS65 NGC. FS-14.87. One of the finest graded of this fairly recent discovery. The obverse is bathed in delicate ice-blue toning with a blush of gold near the top, while the reverse is perfectly matched with blue predominating the majority while the bison's head and body shows lighter gold tones. The surfaces are clean and well preserved as expected for a Gem grade. Traces of the 3 can be seen behind the 4, with the thicker uppermost bar from the underdigit the most prominent. Perhaps the final rarity won't be determined for some years to come, but we do know that few of these have been discovered and it is likely that this will become another very challenging coin for any collector to obtain. The combined NGC and PCGS Population reports show five examples graded this high with a scant two coins seen higher of this variety.
One of the numismatic events in recent memory was the discovery of this variety. The story goes that here in our offices the sale of large quantities of lower value items was taking place. Dealers are invited in to review the large lots and make bids. One of those lots included a quantity of Buffalo nickels. Coin dealer Coleman Foster noticed that the undertype 3 was definitely present under the 4 on one particular coin. Rather than buy the lot at that sale, Coleman alerted Greg Rohan of the discovery. That coin was pulled from the large lot, a deal was struck with Coleman to split the proceeds and Heritage then had the coin certified which was then accomplished and it was sold in June, 1997 Long Beach Sale. It is remarkable that after all the years discoveries are still being made, which of course, is part of the fun of numismatics. Since the discovery of this overdate eight plus years ago, not too many have turned up keeping this a major rarity in any grade, especially so in mint condition. To find a Gem as offered is quite a challenge, and this coin would be the centerpiece of an advanced collection.
