<B>1914/3 5C MS64 PCGS.</B></I> FS-014.87. David Lange, in his Buffalo nickel reference book, says of the 1914/3, the first example of which was found in 1996: "... two and possibly three obverse dies have been found with the overdate feature. This suggests that the dual-dating occurred during the creation of a working hub that then transferred this feature to each working die made from it. This explains both the appearance of several working dies displaying the overdate and also the shallowness of the undertype date. As with any transfer process, the image erodes somewhat as it is copied, and the overdates seen on each coin are thus third-generation copies."<BR> This near-Gem specimen displays a series of horizontal die scratches above the 4 in the date, perhaps the result, according to Lange, "of attempting to remove the underlying numeral 3." The design elements are sharply impressed, and lustrous surfaces exhibit light champagne color accented with rainbow toning around some of the margins.
