1914<$20> PR66 NGC. Mint records indicate that only 70 proof double eagles were produced in 1914, and we estimate that 25 to 30 examples are extant today. The present PR66 specimen displays the especially coarse sandblast finish that is typically found on both the 1914 and 1915 proof twenties. As a matter of note, this coarseness is most apparent when a 1914 or 1915 piece is compared to an earlier date. The surfaces on this coin exhibit a rich khaki-gold color, and show no marks or shiny spots that could be considered distracting. As far as pedigree identifiers are concerned, the only one we see is a very light mark in the middle of the gown fold just above Liberty's navel. The design features are crisply struck throughout. Census: 11 in 66, 2 finer (9/05).
From The Phillip H. Morse Collection of Saint-Gaudens Coinage.
