1914 $2 1/2 PR67 NGC. Ex: Lisa L. Mintages of proof Indian quarter eagles declined considerably after a suspiciously high production of 682 pieces was recorded in 1910. By 1914 it had fallen to just 117 pieces, and the following year it again dropped to a series low 100 pieces. Lack of sufficient sales ended the relatively short run of matte proof gold coinage after 1915. Survivors of this already limited matte proof mintage, those that overcame such hurdles as a Great Depression and the Gold Recall of 1933, have dwindled in number to as few as 70-80 pieces.
Proofs from this year were struck with with coarse, sandblast surfaces (per Breen, 1988) that show no deviation in finish from fields to devices. This Superb, intricately detailed representative is perhaps a bit lighter than the typical olive-gold specimen. Even close inspection and a good light source fails to reveal any shiny spots or faint hairlines. Even the location of the most minute imperfection requires a steady hand and lots of patience. While sales of matte proof coinage at the U.S. Mint may have once languished and eventually been discontinued altogether, their fortunes have taken a 180 degree turnaround in the 21st century. Superb pieces such as this are among the most sought-after items in all of numismatics. Census: 12 in 67, 4 finer (11/06).
From The Dr. Robert J.
