1914 $10 MS66 PCGS. Ex: Duckor. Along with the 1909, the 1914 is one of the scarcest of the Philadelphia Mint regular issues of the Indian Head ten dollar type. Gold specialist David Akers, in his May 1998 catalog of the Dr. Thaine B. Price Collection, wrote: "For many years, this issue was widely considered to be a rather underrated date. However, recently a number of decent quality mint state specimens have appeared on the market reducing this date's rarity status somewhat. Even so, the 1914 is still the second rarest Philadelphia Mint eagle from 1908-1915, exceeded only by the considerably more rare 1909."
Judging by the population reports, the 1914 is not that difficult to obtain in the lesser Mint State grades. Around 1,500 examples have been certified by PCGS and NGC combined in grades MS60 to MS63. Near-Gems, with fewer than 250 certified specimens, become more elusive, and full Gems, with about 60 pieces seen, are quite scarce. MS66 and MS67 coins, with a current certified population of 18 and three, respectively, are virtually unobtainable. This coin set a new record for the date and mintmark when it was sold in April 2006 and realized $40,250.
The 1914 eagle in this lot possesses the typically strong luster characteristics with thick mint frost. Highly attractive peach-gold patina displays occasional blushes of deeper orange, and is imbued with subtle traces of light green. The design elements are exquisitely brought up, including nice definition on the hair near the Indian's ear. A tiny mark on the nose and a couple of more on the cheekbone identify the coin. Population: 7 in 66, 2 finer (11/06).
From The Kutasi Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
