1913 Walter Johnson Wire Photo
1913 Walter Johnson Photograph by Harris & Ewing, Type 1. Magnificent image captures the presentation of the Chalmers Award to the superstar Senators pitcher at the close of the 1913 season. The prize, sponsored by Detroit's Chalmers Automotive, was the first Most Valuable Player Award issued in Major League Baseball, and Johnson's stunning thirty-six and seven record, and ERA of 1.14, made him a runaway winner over second place Shoeless Joe Jackson. The Big Train looks rather sheepish here as the presenter lifts the lid of the trophy to reveal that the large cup is filled with cash. Members of the Senators and visiting Detroit Tigers look on with interest. The boldly contrasted image is the work of Washington D.C.'s most prestigious photography studio, Harris & Ewing, as stamping on verso attests. Harris & Ewing was the photographer of choice for many U.S. Presidents in the early half of the twentieth century as well. Photo measures 5x7" in size and shows only light edge and corner wear with no noteworthy condition flaws.

Important notice:</
