1913-S Lincoln Cent NGC MS65RD
Small Cents 1913-S NGC graded Mint State 65. Red. Full golden red luster isn't commonly found on the branch mint years early in this design's production. The 1913-S is among the most difficult to acquire. We can almost count on the fingers the number of true red, first-rate gems we have been privileged to offer. This coin is one of those. It is a gorgeous specimen. Spot-free and glistening, the surfaces are awash in mint originality, mint freshness as bright and beautiful as though it were struck mere moments ago. The year 1913 was noted for several reasons: it saw the creation of the storied 1913 Liberty nickels, it witnessed the coming of the new Buffalo nickel design; the Federal Reserve banking system was established in this year, and, sadly for the most of us, but happily for those few who were beneficiaries of the event, 1913 also saw the introduction of the Federal income tax. Thomas Woodrow Wilson was president in 1913. Of the Democratic party, he would run for a second term of office in 1916 under the banner of "He Kept Us Out of the War" -- and within months of starting his new term, would declare war on the Germans, Austrians, and their allies. There were very few collectors of Lincoln cents back in 1913. The survival of a lovely mint red gem such as this can only be described as miraculous.
Superior Galleries was founded in 1929 and has been a leader in
