1913-S Buffalo Nickel TYPE 1 NGC MS66
A satiny gem of the finest order. A high degree of bright cartwheel luster spins broadly beneath bright shimmering highlights. Nicely struck with just a modicum of weakness at the bison's shoulder and on the head where it lacks detail.

In the same year that the buffalo nickel entered circulation, James Earle Fraser married Laura Gardin, a fellow artist of renown and the future sculptor of several commemorative half dollars, an example being the 1928 Hawaiian or Captain Cook commemorative. In the forty years that followed, until his death in 1953, Fraser completed dozens of commissioned works in a variety of sculptural forms, but sadly, he returned to the familiar themes of the Native American and the bison only rarely. Perhaps he knew instinctively he could never improve upon this masterful Indian head, bison reverse five cent design.
