1913-S $5 MS65 PCGS.
1913-S $5 MS65 PCGS.<p>In terms of overall scarcity, the 1913-S Five Dollar (from a mintage of 408,000 pieces) is not particularly noteworthy in comparison to other Indian Half Eagles, being relatively available in circulated to near Mint State grades. Like other S-mint issues of this type, an immediate decline in availability is noticed at the Uncirculated level and examples grading as high as MS63 can be considered quite scarce. Everything about this amazing Gem defies what is normally expected of a 1913-S Indian. The surfaces are incredibly lustrous and almost completely draped in natural orange patina, lightening to a more delicate golden hue in isolated areas on each side. Not only are the feathers on the headdress and the tips of the eagle's wing sharply detailed, but the often mushy mintmark is also crisply defined. So well produced is this specimen that one has to conjecture if it was some type presentation strike. Regardless of its origin, this exceptional 1913-S Half Eagle has to be counted among the finest known surviving examples. Population: 1 in 65, 1 finer (10/01).
