1913-S $5 MS63 PCGS. In the early 20th century, gold coins circulated more freely on the West Coast than in the East, and the average San Francisco piece from that time is more likely to show wear than its Philadelphia counterpart. Like a number of other S-mint Indian half eagles, the 1913-S becomes elusive in Mint State, conditionally scarce in Select, and rare any finer. It ranks as one of the most challenging pieces to acquire, behind only better-known issues such as the 1909-O, the 1911-D, and the 1929. This appealing representative has softly lustrous, pleasing honey-gold and orange surfaces. The strike is crisp, and only a few wispy abrasions are evident in the fields. With its considerable eye appeal, this MS63 example would make an excellent candidate for a similarly graded date set.

Coin Engraver: Bela Lyon Pratt

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
