1913-S $20 MS65 PCGS. Frosty and bright with plea
1913-S<$20> MS65 PCGS. Frosty and bright with pleasing yellow-gold luster on the obverse and reverse. The strike is sharp on Liberty, even the Capitol is bold left of her dress. A rare and popular date in higher Uncirculated grades, with this Gem representing a very select few that have achieved this level. Most were mishandled over the years, simply by shipping to and from Europe and banging about in large canvass bags in some forgotten bank vault. The double eagles that remained in America were melted during the gold recall in 1933, so the majority of those found today can be traced back to the hoards that slipped away to Europe or South America prior to the 1930s. The survivors show considerable handling marks from these worldly ventures, and while technically Uncirculated, are generally less desirable. This regal coin retained the beauty imparted by the dies, and the surfaces are excellent. This particular coin is identifiable by a dull mark which thins out the D of DOLLAR on the reverse, and a small nick on the edge of the sun below IN. As to grade rarity, the combined NGC and PCGS Population data show 23 pieces graded this high, with a single coin graded higher of this date. Keep that in mind when bidding, for such quality is downright hard to find.
