1913-S $10 MS67 NGC. With an original mintage of just 66,000 pieces, the 1913-S is one of the rarest dates of the Indian Head eagle series. It is scarce in any condition, with most survivors seemingly in VF or XF grades. In Uncirculated condition, the '13-S is rare, and in Choice or Gem it is very rare. Indeed, Akers considers the '13-S "extremely difficult, if not virtually impossible, to obtain in MS64 or better condition...Nearly everyone collecting Indian Head eagles, past or present, needs a choice example of this issue, and there are no more than a half dozen or so in MS64 or better condition to go around." This estimate includes the specimens that are impounded or already in major collections.
Of the 192 Mint State 1913-S eagles certified by NGC and PCGS combined, only two have attained the lofty grade of MS67, with none finer (1/05). Both examples were certified by NGC. One of these specimens was from the William Thomas Michaels Collection, sold in Stack's January 21, 2004 sale as lot 3021, where it realized $143,750. The other Superb Gem '13-S, which we offer in this lot, displays a crisp strike, with bold definition noted on all of the design elements, including the Indian's hair and headress feathers, and on the eagle's feathers. The surfaces are covered in frosty luster, overlain by warm peach-gold patina with subtle greenish and faded reddish accents, and are exquisitely preserved. Just one tiny mark is apparent in the lower left obverse field, along with a few well-concealed marks in the middle and lower portions of the eagle's left wing.
This is a truly rare opportunity for the connoisseur of U.S. gold coinage to acquire one of the finest known '13-S eagles. One can only speculate on when a coin of this caliber will reappear on the market. Lot:8880
