1913-S<$10> MS64 PCGS. There are few 20th century gold coins that are as rare as this date, especially when the higher grade levels are reached. The mintage of this issue was just 66,000 coins. This production total ranks 14th out of just 27 issues in the regular series of United States 20th century gold coins with mintages under 100,000 coins. The mintage is also the sixth lowest of the Indian Head design gold eagles (not counting the rare With Periods "pattern" coins).
This date is one of the important condition rarities in the Indian eagle series. Although we have offered 227 different examples of the date for auction sale since January 1993, only 10 previous appearances were for MS64 grade examples, and only once did we offer a finer grade coin (which happened to be an MS67). David Akers noted that this date is essentially impossible to find in any Gem level grade.
The example that we are offering here is a lovely Choice Mint State specimen with brilliant and frosty yellow-gold luster. All of the design elements are nicely detailed, although the top of the eagle's wing is a little flat as usual. The surfaces are impressive with only a few minor flaws that keep it from a Gem grade level. The obverse has a thin orange planchet lamination that was present at the time this coin was minted. Liberty's cheek and neck have a few grade-consistent ticks. Still and all, this is an exceptional example for the grade, and it is essentially the best quality available. Population: 13 in 64, 3 finer (4/06).
