1913 Lockout: Letter from William Gladstone Jnr. regarding the release of Jim Larkin from prison
manuscript on headed paper
18 by 11cm., 7 by 4.5in.

An interesting letter dated 23 November 1913 and sent by William Glynne Charles Gladstone M.P., relating to the release of Jim Larkin and his "rank and file" still in jail. In October 1913 Larkin had been sentenced to seven months imprisonment for his involvement in the lock out but was released after just two weeks due to public pressure. In this letter, written ten days after Larkin's release, Gladstone describes how requests from his constituents resulted in him making a plea on behalf of Larkin to Augustine Birrell, Chief Secretary for Ireland. Despite the release of Larkin, Gladstone now found himself in a similar position in relation to the imprisoned "rank and file" of Larkin's movement and asks the recipient if the Dublin MP's would have a problem with him "interfering" in their constituency. William C. G. Gladstone was Member of Parliament for Kilmarnock Burghs and grandson of Prime Minister W. E. Gladstone, he was killed in action during the First World War.
