1913-D 5C Type Two MS68 NGC. The Type Two 1913-D Buffalo nickel (as well as the Type Two 1913 and 1913-S) resulted from a flaw in James Earle Fraser's initial design. This is explained in an April 3, 2007 Numismatic News article by Paul Green:

"The James Earle Fraser design, while enormously popular, stared out with a design that had the animal standing on a mound. The denomination was placed on that mound and 1913 production began before officials discovered that the denomination had become the highest part of the design and might well wear off quickly."

Green goes on to say: "... officials ... were taking no chances deciding immediately to change the reverse by putting the animal on a line so the denomination could be lower in the design."

The MS68 1913-D Type Two nickel offering in this lot is the single highest graded example of this issue by either NGC or PCGS. Its radiantly lustrous surfaces are bathed in pastel violet, aqua-blue, gold, and apricot patina, and are immaculately preserved. A powerful strike imparts crisp and even definition to all of the design elements. A simply amazing coin!

Coin Engraver: James E.
