1913-D<50C> MS65 NGC. This coin is not of the status or rarity of an 1897-S or an 1892-O, but the 1913-D is nonetheless a low-mintage semi-key in the Barber half series, one that is largely unheralded and probably underappreciated. This is probably due to its status as a coin with a fairly low, but not extremely low mintage for a Denver mint issue, and one near the series end that likely was not saved in quantity. The following comparison may shed more light on the desirability and relative rarity of this coin: while NGC has graded 15 coins of the 1892-O issue in MS65 or higher, and 12 coins of the 1897-S issue in MS65 or higher, it has graded only slightly more coins, 18 precisely, of the 1913-D in MS65 or higher. This appealing, strictly Gem example is toned in hues of copper, bronze, and gold on both sides. This coin is well struck up, with slight softness on a couple of stars and the eagle's right (facing) claw. Examination under a glass reveals a tick on Liberty's chin. Census: 13 in 65, 5 finer (12/05).
