1913-D<$20> MS66 PCGS. The 1913 date carries a certain cachet of rarity for all three issues of double eagles from that year. Only one has a memorably low mintage, the 1913-S, with only 34,000 pieces struck. More than ten times that many were produced of the 1913-D, and yet it is perceived to be rarer than other D-mints from the 1910-1916 era. In reality, the 1913-D is a fairly common coin in the lower grades of Uncirculated and even in MS64. However, there is a distinct drop-off in availability at the Gem level, and at the MS66 level the '13-D is virtually unavailable. The combined population of MS66 1913-D twenties shows that nine pieces have been certified--two by PCGS and seven by NGC. We doubt that many actual coins exist in this grade, and submit that several of these nine coins are actually resubmissions. However, none were successful in achieving a higher grade, and MS66 still stands as the finest grade obtainable. The last MS66 sold at public auction was the Morse coin, and that phenomenal piece brought $37,375.
Akers notes that two distinct finishes are seen on the 1913-D. One is softly frosted with some granularity. The other is satiny. He also notes that this latter finish is, for some unknown reason, seen most frequently on high grade examples. This particular piece has that satin-like finish. The surfaces are exceptionally clean, especially on the obverse. The coin has a slight reddish tinge with subtle accents of lilac interspersed. Fully struck. This is a rare opportunity for the advanced collector of Saint-Gaudens twenties.
