1913-D $20 MS66 PCGS. A look at the Permanent Auction Archives reveals that Heritage has only auctioned two 1913-D double eagles in an MS66 grade -- the Morse specimen in October 2005, which realized $37,375, and a second coin, sold in our October 2006 Dallas auction for $34,500. The description for the latter coin read, in part: "...there is a distinct drop-off in availability at the Gem level, and at the MS66 level the '13-D is virtually unavailable. The combined population of MS66 1913-D twenties shows that nine pieces have been certified--two by PCGS and seven by NGC. We doubt that many actual coins exist in this grade, and submit that several of these nine coins are actually resubmissions. However, none were successful in achieving a higher grade, and MS66 still stands as the finest grade obtainable."

The population figures have changed slightly in the intervening months to reflect the addition of the current piece, which is a distinct coin from either of those mentioned above. Indeed, this coin may very well be the finest of the three we've seen in this grade. Close examination of the piece shows that the grade is well-deserved, as only the most trivial of surface marks are visible on the coin's fully lustrous satin surfaces. Perhaps 80-90% of the surface is covered in peach-gold color, with an attractive light lime-gold hue visible at the top of the obverse and the bottom of the reverse.

This is a rare opportunity for the advanced Saint-Gaudens collector to acquire a coin that will set his collection apart from the rest, an unsurpassed piece in technical terms with eye appeal to spare. It could be years before the equal of this coin becomes available again. Population: 3 in 66, 0 finer (3/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
