1913 Buffalo 5C. Type 2 PCGS PR66
1913 Buffalo Nickel. Type 2. PCGS graded Proof 66. A lustrous example of this low mintage Proof date, delicately toned and nothing short of pristine throughout; excellent nickel-gold color. This is a well-struck example of the very scarce Type 2 Proof with bold details. It has no bothersome abrasions or spots or points of wear but on the contrary displays smooth satiny "matte" characteristics. Technically, these were made using a fine sandblasting process. Struck twice by the dies, all elements of the design show with razor-clarity.

An immediate question that arose following the introduction of the new nickel was the identity of the obverse model. Pressed for an answer, designer James Earle Fraser eventually felt compelled to respond: he revealed the names of Iron Tail, a Sioux, and Two Moons, a Cheyenne, as being among the three models engaged. His memory failed him on the identity of the third, but the most reliable evidence suggests that the third model was Big Tree, a Kiowa.
