1913<5C> Type Two PR67 PCGS. The Type Two 1913 Nickel is a somewhat overlooked issue, standing as it does in the shadow of the one-year Type One. It is a curiously scarce issue also, even though 1,514 pieces were struck. The number of certified survivors is so small that Lange (2000) believes a decent number of coins must have been melted as unsold at year's end. Pinpoint striking details characterize this piece along with nearly perfect preservation of the surfaces. This is a coin that can really "face up to a close up." Just put a 16x magnifier over the surfaces and try to find what keeps this coin from an even higher grade. As a bonus, crescents of rich, red-golden toning decorate the left borders of each side, while the remainder of the coin is a streaky ice-blue color. Population: 40 in 67, 4 finer (11/05).
