1913<5C> Type Two PR67 NGC. In a probable effort to increase the desirability and, hence, the survivability of the proof Buffalo Nickel, the Philadelphia Mint took greater care in the manufacture of the Type Two 1913 production than it had for the Type One issue. However, the collecting public was already disenchanted with the proof Nickels of 1913, and the Mint's workmanship for the Type Two was not superior enough to force a significant change in public opinion. As a result, many of the 1,514 proof 1913 Type Two Nickels were likely melted as unsold, a fate that explains the current rarity of this issue.
The present representative is exceptionally well preserved with no outwardly distracting blemishes. The already memorable eye appeal benefits even further from target-like gold, powder-blue, lilac, and champagne toning that is a little more vivid on the obverse. Fully brought up with broad borders and an unmistakable satin texture. Accuracy alone compels us to mention a few trivial, barely noticeable flyspecks over the lower reverse and a single speck in the field before the Chief's eye. Population: 32 in 67, 5 finer (8/05).
