1913<5C> Type One PR68 <S NGC. In the 2000 book The Complete Guide to Buffalo Nickels, David W. Lange spills a considerable amount of ink on the difficulty that numismatists have always had distinguishing specimens strikings of this first-year issue from well produced business strikes. This is an important distinction since the failure of collectors to properly make it resulted in the loss of numerous proofs to circulation in the years immediately following delivery. The elusive survivors are most easily attributable today by fullness of strike, the satin texture of the surfaces, and broad borders--all of these features being readily evident on the present Superb Gem. When considering the population of 1913 to 1916 Proof Buffalo Nickels in grades 68 and 69 by PCGS and NGC, the 1913 Type 1 is tied with the 1915 for the lowest population with a total of 4 coins in these grades combined (9/05). NGC has yet to see a single 1913 Type I Buffalo Nickel in proof format that rivals this example.
This Superb Gem Proof Buffalo, with its star designation, radiates with rainbow color, especially on the obverse. The obverse has light bluish color across the Indian's face, and this is framed by pale gold and lilac. The reverse is not so deeply toned, but is similar in appearance. Exquisitely struck, and with full underlying luster on both sides. Population: 2 in 68, 0 finer (9/05).
From The Sounder Collection.
