1913 5C Type One PR66 PCGS. As a first-year issue, the proof 1913 Type One Nickel should be a relatively common coin. After all, the curiosity that the American public often displayed toward new coin types meant that more than a few first-year examples were set aside in high grade. This does not, however, appear to have happened with the proof 1913 Type One. Perhaps the difficulty with which these coins were distinguished from business strikes meant that many were accidentally spent, or maybe the finely grained, satin-like finish did not appeal to collectors who had become accustomed to brilliant finishes on proof coins. Regardless of which, if either, of these theories is correct, there is little doubt that a Gem proof 1913 Type One is an important offering for the Buffalo Nickel specialist. This is a no-questions proof whose finely granular surfaces have survived the passage of time without acquiring any distracting hairlines or contact marks. There is a very tiny spot in the right obverse field, but, otherwise, the surfaces present as carbon-free. Sharply struck with delicate golden-gray patina, this is an appealing Gem in all regards.
