1913 5C Type One MS68 PCGS. The fields of all Type One
1913 5C Type One MS68 PCGS. The fields of all Type One Buffalo nickels, not just the proof coins, show the textured fields as on James Earle Fraser's original models, and therefore they give the coins' luster a "shimmering quality, particularly on unworn dies," according to Lange. In fact, "first strikes from unworn dies are easily mistaken for proofs and vice versa." This coin is, however, an unmistakable circulation strike, as it lacks the fully squared rims on the inside margin that a proof exhibits. It is nonetheless an extraordinary piece, showing a strike that is nearly full but shows a tad of softness on the letter tops of LIBERTY. There is also some light die clashing obvious on both sides, if only under a loupe. The coloration is a scintillating combination of lilac, ice-blue, and light olive. Although the die is obviously not unworn or unused, both the luster and overall state of preservation of this remarkable coin are really quite extraordinary.
