1913 $5 PR67 PCGS. A pristine specimen that ideally showcases the sandblast proofing method briefly used for Bela Pratt's incuse Indian Head design. Like the preceding year's proof half eagle, the 1913 displays finely grained matte surfaces with innumerable microscopic granules that combine to produce a satiny effect. A mere 99 pieces were originally struck for collectors, although it is unlikely if even half of that number is extant. Now several decades old, it is still worth noting that when Akers compiled the data for his reference on the half eagle series he only recorded 18 appearances over a 37-year period. Additionally, the combined population of PCGS and NGC for proofs of this date totals just 47 pieces, which obviously includes more than a few resubmissions.
Survivors of this issue tend to be well preserved, yet almost invariably reveal one or two tiny shiny areas where the fragile surface has bumped against another object. This rich olive-gold specimen appears to have been meticulously stored over the decades, with only a single paper-thin disturbance noted beneath RTY in LIBERTY. Only the rarity and value of this important 20th century gold proof would cause us to even mention such an inconsequential imperfection. This combination of undeniable rarity and unsurpassable condition should attract a number of serious bidders. Population: 3 in 67, 0 finer (11/06).
From The Dr. Robert J.
