1913 $5 PR67 NGC. Struck in the fine sandblast finish
1913<$5> PR67 NGC. Struck in the fine sandblast finish and perfectly matching that of the 1912 Superb Gem proof also in this sale. Proof mintage tailed off from even the dismal numbers coined in 1912, with the 1913 issue coming in at 99 pieces. Of those, most remain in Gem grades or nearly so, as collectors have carefully preserved these delicate coins since the time of issue. The present coin is tied with a select dozen as the finest graded between NGC and PCGS. A specialist assembling a date run of these would find that few are offered in any given year, and the quality would likely be inferior to the present coin. It could be years before another pristine example is offered from the dozen graded. The present coin is as close to technical perfection as a collector could obtain, with the millions of tiny facets carefully preserved. An examination will find no trace evidence of handling or contact to confirm the passage of 94 years since this coin was struck.
Woodrow Wilson assumed the stewardship of America in early 1913, with his hopeful policies and promises. In terms of progress, Henry Ford completed his first assembly line to make cars. With the new assembly line Ford was able to produce cars far more quickly than ever before and for much less money. Soon the price of a Ford was low enough that working people could afford one for the first time in history. America soon took to the roads, and before long the local and federal governments were building roads to handle the ever-growing number of cars. Politicians took another step forward with the passage of two important items, the first income tax was passed and the Federal Reserve was formed. Nothing has been the same ever since. The present coin is a reminder of those simpler times, and will be a delight to any specialist who takes the time to study its many charms.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids.
