1913 $20 PR67 NGC. As with any proof double eagle, examples from this year are rare in the truest sense of the word, as can be easily ascertained by its minuscule mintage of 58 coins, which is second lowest in the series. Unlike the previous two issues, a greater percentage of the mintage seems to have been set aside and survives today. Still, probably no more than 35-40 individual coins are probably extant today. This number of survivors is somewhat higher than in previous years, and it is also a more accurate estimation of the number of coins remaining. David Akers' estimate of 20-25 coins seems a bit on the low side, especially when more than 60 pieces have been certified by both NGC and PCGS (5/07).
As with most 1913 proofs, the matte surfaces on this coin exhibit a brownish-khaki coloration that is similar to the color seen on 1908 proofs, more so than on other dates in the series. The surfaces show a pronounced granularity, and when closely examined each of the thousands of individual granules sparkle in a random, diffuse manner. Even with the aid of magnification, the tiniest of surface flaws appear to be of mint origin. Whether this magnificent specimen could possibly be deserving of an even higher rating is up to the potential buyer. Either way, the importance of this classic 20th century gold issue cannot be underestimated and its technical and aesthetic merits are equally sound. Census: 10 in 67, 2 finer (5/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
